The Aztecs:A warlike nation
The fruit of the water
Aztec economy was based on agricultural production, commerce, and tribute. Tribute was the amount of money or goods that the people had the obligation to pay to the tlaotoani.Although the Aztecs managed to grow crops. They made large bamboo garges on the lakes, which they filled with mud and branches. Then, they planted trees around the barges so the roots would fix them to the bottom. This way, they made floating gardens, called chinampas, where they grew corn, beans, tomatoes, and cocoa. Trade consisted of barter - exchange- of goods, such as jewelry, stones, or cloth and agricultural products that were sold in the markets.
Aztec religious life
Religion was an important aspect of Aztec life. They, as the Mayas, believed in many gods. Their main gods were the god of sun, and the god of knowledge (represented by a feathered serpent).
War was essential to Aztecs religious life. Rituals demaned human sacrifices. Therefore, one of the main objectives of war was to capture prisioners to offer as sacrifices to the gods. Also, they believed in life after death, so warriors went to heaven.
The Aztecs founded a city called Teotihuacan, which means "the place where men become gods."

Achievements of the Aztecs
The Aztecs reached great advances in many aspects of ther culture. They were excellent atchitects, as seen in the construction of their temples, pyramids, and palaces. The city of Tenochtitlan, for example, was representative of the greatness of Aztec civilization. Since it was built on an island in the center of the lake, how do you think they traveled from one place to another? They made canals that serve as streets.
The present-day capital of Mexico, Mexico City, is on the ruins of the ancient Aztec city.
The Aztecs also reached a high level of scientific knowledge. One of their greatest achievements was the calendar, although it was not as precise as the Mayan. This calendar is the largest Aztec sculpture ever found. It is also know as sunstone.

Take a look at the calendar and, then, read what each number represents.
- The face of an Aztec god, which could be the sun or the goddess of the earth.
- The four stone panels that surround the center represent the jaguar, the wind, the rain, and the water.
- The twenty days of the Aztec month.
In the Aztec calendar, the year has three hundred and sixty-five days, grouped into eighteen months of twenty days each.
Like the Mayas, the Aztecs also developed hieroglyphs that were used in the codex is an ancient handwritten book of historic importance.
The Aztecs are also known for being very talented mathematicians. They represented numbers with symbols and dots.
In the arts, the Aztecs stood out for their feather and precious stones decorations. Nevertheless, the best samples of Aztec artwork are the scuptures, through which they expressed their religious beliefs and values.
